I remember being interested in the visual arts and music from a young age. Schoolteachers praised various art projects early on, and as soon as I was old enough for an instrument in fourth grade school band, I’ve been a drummer.
My interest in photography began in high school, carrying an old Pentax K1000 meant I became the unofficial photographer for mine and my friends’ bands. My first photo projects were singers, guitarists and drummers, and their stage-diving fans from across the Midwest. I’ve got lots of fond memories of the Midwest underground music scene of the late 80’s and early 90’s.
My taste in music has changed (I now play drums in a vintage country band: ‘Moonshine Mason and the Rot Gut Gang') and so has the subject matter for my photography. I still enjoy photographing a band occasionally, maybe even some skateboarding, but I challenge myself artistically shooting modeling sessions, weddings, and commercial projects.
While many professionals get their start covering weddings, then “move on” after a couple of years, I’m proud of the fact that I’m entering my tenth season as a professional wedding photographer, and that I still challenge myself to create breathtaking images.
Styles and approaches have changed drastically in the last 4 or 5 years, and my work’s no exception. A member of the Wedding Photo Journalist Association, I strive to provide ‘real’ coverage of the weddings and events I photograph. Digital photography has also presented many new creative opportunities over the years.
Most of all, I’m a ‘people person’, I enjoy my work and have fun with it!
